Emissions may dictate fuel levies

The Excise Department is considering an overhaul of tax rates for petroleum based on carbon dioxide emissions.

Tax rates for petroleum products are currently set based on product type, with petrol charged a tax of seven baht per litre, gasohol 6.30 baht and diesel 5.31 baht per litre. Taxes are collected directly from refineries.

But a Finance Ministry official said the tax structure could be changed to be based on carbon emissions, similar to a proposed new tax structure for automobiles.
